Solid Electrolytes for Li-ion Batteries

SOLIDEL aims to explore a radically new, future technological possibility based on the principles of nanostructured macromolecular materials for the synthesis of solid polymer electrolytes (SPEs) that will enable the realization of safe, high-energy lithium-ion batteries. The project targets to the development of single-ion SPEs that will fulfill all the requirements that the next generation SPEs should possess for the realization of safe, high-energy, long-lifetime batteries: high ionic conductivity on the order of 10-3 S/cm at room temperature, good mechanical properties on the order of GPa, and high Li+ transference number, r+, close to unity.

The final goal of the project concerns the realization of next generation secondary Li+-ion batteries, LIBs. This particular goal is an extremely important challenge as it requires a number of technological and scientific breakthroughs, and is globally at the cutting edge of technology. Nevertheless, despite the considerable research effort, LIBs have remained virtually unchanged, at the technological level, in the last 25 years.  Most importantly, LIBs have a very significant share of the world battery market. According to market research reports, the world demand for primary and secondary batteries was more than 23 billion Euros in 2015 and is forecasted to grow by 9 percent annually until 2024.
