Dr. Emmanuel Stratakis serves as the Director of the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL-FORTH). His election marks the beginning of a new era for the Institute into a new era of scientific excellence, technological innovation, and international collaboration.

Academic & Professional Journey

Academic Foundations: Received his Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Crete (2001).
International Experience: Served as a Visiting Researcher at the University of California, Berkeley (Department of Mechanical Engineering) during the fall semesters of 2006 and 2008.
Pioneering Research: Established and continues to lead the internationally recognized Ultrafast Laser Micro- and Nano-processing Laboratory at IESL.
Institutional Leadership: Served as Vice Director of IESL (April 2023 – April 2025) and Acting Director from May 2025 until his official election as Director.

Scientific Achievements & Global Recognition

Publications & Citations: Author of over 300 peer-reviewed publications with more than 17,000 citations and an h-index of 71 (Google Scholar).
Global Ranking: Consistently ranked among the top 2% of scientists worldwide.
Key Appointments: Director of the FORTH Nanoscience Facility since 2015 and National Expert in the European Union High-Level Group on Nanotechnologies and Advanced Materials.
Prestigious Distinctions: OPTICA Fellow and European Innovation Council (EIC) Ambassador.
Innovation & Entrepreneurship: Founder and Chief Executive Officer of the spin-off company Biomimetic.
