This video from Optics and Photonics News, Optical Society of America highlights exciting research findings that characterized the year in optics, including biological lasers, events cloaked in time and high-definition 3-D television. Among these annual highlights, the development of Magnetofluidically Tunable Microstructured Optical Fiber Grating Devices was included.

“Solar Innovation 2010” – The Grand Challenge in Photovoltaics

Prof. Nikos Pelekanos, Collaborating Faculty Member in IESL-FORTH, is one of the recipients of 'Solar-Innovation 2010' for his proposal 'III-V nanowires for next generation photovoltaics'. The prize is awarded by the French Atomic Energy Commission (Commissariat a l' Energie Atomique), after an Open Call and selection among dozens of proposals, and includes funding and technical support to carry out the proposed research for three years.

Greece Innovates!

The Transparent Conductive Materials and Devices Group (TCM&D) of IESL-FORTH has been selected as one of the top 10 finalists in the competition of Applied Research & Innovation organized by the Hellenic Federation of Enterprises (SEV) and Eurobank EFG with the project “Degradation of pollutants for Indoor Air Quality”.

Laser rejuvenation of a Caryatid at the Acropolis Museum: A link between ancient and modern Greece

Behind a protective housing, an advanced laser laboratory has been recently set up on the visitors’ floor where the Caryatids are exhibited at the Acropolis Museum. Removal of pollution accumulations from their surface takes place in this laboratory. This arrangement brings the visitors of the Acropolis Museum in contact with the conservation interventions that until now took place only inside restricted access laboratory environments. This exhibits a symbolic connection between ancient and modern Greece.

Professor Costas Fotakis, Director of IESL/FORTH, has been awarded the title of "Docteur Honoris Causa de l’ Université de la Méditerranée", Marseille, France.

In June 2010 Professor Costas Fotakis, Director of IESL/FORTH, has been awarded the title of “Docteur Honoris Causa de l’ Université de la Méditerranée”, Marseille, France. The respective official award ceremony, where the recipient was invited to give a short presentation of his scientific work, took place on November 18, 2010 during the “Journée Académique et Scientifique”, organized by the Université de la Mediterranée.

Photosensitive materials for two-photon polymerisation

Dr. Giannis Mpourmpakis was selected to participate in the 60th Nobel Laureates Meeting as a young researcher.

Dr. Giannis Mpourmpakis (Ioannis Bourmpakis), a post doctorate researcher in Dr. Andriotis' group, at the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser, was selected to participate in the 60th Nobel Laureates Meeting as a young researcher. The 2010 Meeting takes place from June 27th to July 2nd, 2010 in Lindau, Germany.

It will be an interdisciplinary meeting bringing together young researchers from around the globe with Nobel Laureates from the fields of physiology, medicine, physics and chemistry. http://www.lindau-nobel.de/2010_Meeting_Interdisciplinary.AxCMS?ActiveID=1338

Each young researcher belongs to the budding scientific elite of his/her country and has passed a multi-stage international selection procedure. Dr. Mpourmpakis was awarded a Marie-Curie International Outgoing Fellowship by the European Commission in 2008 to investigate the CO oxidation on Au nanoparticles in Prof. Vlachos' group, at the Chemical Engineering Department, University of Delaware, together with Andriotis' group of the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser - FORTH.
