Professor Spiros Anastasiadis elected President of the European Polymer Federation


 Spiros H. Anastasiadis, Professor of the Department of Chemistry of the University of Crete and Director of the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL) of the Foundation for Research and Technology – Hellas (FORTH), has been unanimously elected as the President of the European Polymer Federation (EPF) for the period 2018-2019. 

EPF is an umbrella non-profit organization of National Polymer Societies in Europe. It was established in 1986 with 16 European Countries as founding members whereas today it includes 24 full and 4 associate members.  The goals of EPF are to co-ordinate and stimulate the activities of the European Countries in the science, technology and applications of synthetic and natural macromolecules, to encourage European cooperation and networking in polymer science and engineering and to promote and advance the potential of European young polymer scientists.

Prof. Anastasiadis holds a Diploma in Chemical Engineering (Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, 1983) and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering (Princeton University, 1988).  His research interests are in the areas of polymer surfaces/interfaces and thin films, polymer blends, organic/inorganic nanohybrid materials and responsive polymer systems.  He was awarded the John H. Dillon Medal of the American Physical Societyin 1998 and was elected Fellow of the American Physical Society in 2000.  He has served as an Editor of the Journal of Polymer Science, Part B: Polymer Physics (2006-2010) and as a Consulting Editor for AIChE Journal (2012-2016).  He is appointed as a Member of the Editorial Advisory Board of Macromolecules (1/2015-).  He has been the Chairman of the Hellenic Polymer Society since 2012.

Prof. Anastasiadis was elected President of EPF by the General Assembly of national representatives and succeeds Prof. Jean-François Gérard of INSA Lyon, who is the President of EPF for 2016-2017.  It is the second time that a Greek polymer scientist is voted in the EPF leadership following Prof. Nikos Hadjichristidis, who was the President during 1996-1997.

The election of Prof. Anastasiadis as EPF President is one more confirmation of the leading role of FORTH and the University of Crete in the research on polymer materials science and engineering within Europe and the world.  The impact of this research is especially important now that science and innovation are critical factors for the development of the Country.

LASER CLEANING DEMOS ON THE LATE ROMAN MOSAIC FLOORS OF THE NATIONAL GARDEN OF ATHENS


On 21 and 22 of April 2016 the laser cleaning team of IESL-FORTH (Photonics for CH group) participated to the in-situ workshop "Documentation and Conservation of Mosaics in-situ” organized by the Architectural Conservation Laboratory of the TEI of Athens, in collaboration with the Directorate of Conservation of Ancient and Modern Monuments of the Greek Ministry of Culture and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Athens. The workshop, focused on the Late Roman mosaic floors which are located at the National Garden of Athens, was sponsored by J.M. Kaplan Fund.

The last 2 days of the workshop were dedicated to laser cleaning. Principles and case examples of laser cleaning were discussed, as well as health and safety issues upon operation of the laser cleaning systems (by P. Pouli). The workshop also involved demos on the mosaics (by A. Papanikolaou) while the participants had also the chance to operate themselves the system that was transported for this purpose on-site. This on-site laser cleaning action was also attended by conservators and staff-members of the related Directorates and Ephorates of the Greek Ministry of Culture.
 
Preliminary tests on tesserae (mosaic cubes) with similar pathologies were performed prior to the workshop at the laser cleaning laboratories of IESL-FORTH. Along these studies the research group of IESL-FORTH (K. Melessanaki, A. Papanikolaou and P. Pouli) has collaborated with Stefania Chlouveraki (TEI of Athens) and Elissavet Anamaterou (Directorate of Conservation of Ancient and Modern Monuments of the Greek Ministry of Culture) in order to determine the appropriate laser system, the optimum parameters and the cleaning methodology

Σκοπός της εκδήλωσης ήταν να ξεκινήσει η προσπάθεια για να γεφυρωθεί το χάσμα μεταξύ της έρευνας που γίνεται σε Ερευνητικά Κέντρα και Πανεπιστήμια και της παραγωγής και να ενθαρρύνει τις Επιχειρήσεις να συνεργαστούν με τα Ερευνητικά Κέντρα για να αναπτύξουν, με βασικό εργαλείο την καινοτομία, νέα ανταγωνιστικά προϊόντα που θα απευθύνονται σε  διεθνές επίπεδο.

Weissenberg Award 2015 to Dimitris Vlassopoulos


IESL proudly announces that Prof. Dimitris Vlassopoulos (IESL Affiliated Faculty Member and Professor of the Materials Science and Technology Department of the University of Crete) was selected to win the  Weissenberg Award of the European Society of Rheology for 2015  (http://rheology-esr.net/2015/01/13/weissenberg-award-2015-to-dimitris-vlassopoulos/).

The European Society of Rheology (ESR) decided in 1997 to create a “Weissenberg Award” (http://rheology-esr.net/about-esr/awards/) for outstanding, long-term achievements in the field of rheology, in commemoration of the scientific achievements of Karl Weissenberg, performed in several European countries. Eligible are rheologists whose centre of scientific activities lies in Europe.

Prof. Vlassopoulos was selected to receive the award for his “seminal contributions to the rheology and rheophysics of architecturally complex polymers and colloids in bulk and at interfaces”.

IESL expresses its warmest Congratulations to prof. Vlassopoulos and wishes more distinctions for him personally and for the Polymer Group.

Researchers at IESL achieve the brightest atom laser ever


The BEC and Matter Waves group of IESL has demonstrated the brightest atom laser to date. They removed a fundamental limitation in the outcoupling of an atom laser from a Bose-Einstein Condensate, which allowed them to demonstrate an atom flux seven times larger than what was previously possible.

New Publication: New Visible Light Absorbing Materials for Solar Fuels, Ga(Sbx)N1-x


Photo-electrochemical (PEC) water splitting and photocatalytic carbon dioxide reduction are the most
promising approaches for utilizing solar energy to produce clean fuels.
The practical implementation of the PEC water splitting technology using sunlight is discovering a
suitable material that will simultaneously satisfy a number of criteria including: (i) the material to
posess the correct band gap; (ii) the redox potentials of the water reactions should be included within
the energy range of the band gap, and (iii) the material to be stable against corrosion.
In a series of recent papers, Dr. Antonis Andriotis (IESL/FORTH) and Prof. Madhu Menon (University of
Kentucky in Lexington, KY, USA) predicted that GaN (with a direct band gap of 3.45 eV) can be
engineered to have its band gap value drastically reduced to approximately 1.5 eV if doped with Sb up
to 8 at%. In addition, it was predicted that the redox potentials of H2O could be included within the
range of the energy gap of GaSbxN1-x (x < 8%). These predictions make GaSbxN1-x a very promising
material for water splitting in the visible regime.
The predictions of Andriotis and Menon have recently been verified experimentally by a series of
experimental tests performed by the group of Prof. Mahendra Sunkara (Department of Chemical
Engineering and Conn Center for Renewable Energy Research, University of Louisville). Additionally, the
corresponding photo-electrochemical data on activity and stability suggest that these alloys are highly
suitable for solar water splitting.

International Award to the Acropolis Museum and FORTH for the laser cleaning of Caryatids


The Acropolis Museum and the Institute of Electronic Structure and Lasers (IESL) of the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas (FORTH) have been awarded the biennial Keck Award by the International Institute for Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works (IIC) for their common project regarding "*Laser rejuvenation of Caryatids opens to the public at the Acropolis Museum: A link between ancient and modern Greece"*. The award was given jointly to the team of the Acropolis Museum / the Foundation for Research and Technology-Hellas and for their contribution "towards the promotion of public understanding and appreciation of the accomplishments of the conservation profession". The ceremony took place on Friday 14th of September 2012, at the closing session of the biennial IIC congress in Vienna, which attracted 350 delegates.

“Solar Innovation 2010” – The Grand Challenge in Photovoltaics


Prof. Nikos Pelekanos, Collaborating Faculty Member in IESL-FORTH, is one of the recipients of 'Solar-Innovation 2010' for his proposal 'III-V nanowires for next generation photovoltaics'. The prize is awarded by the French Atomic Energy Commission (Commissariat a l' Energie Atomique), after an Open Call and selection among dozens of proposals, and includes funding and technical support to carry out the proposed research for three years.

Laser rejuvenation of a Caryatid at the Acropolis Museum: A link between ancient and modern Greece


Behind a protective housing, an advanced laser laboratory has been recently set up on the visitors’ floor where the Caryatids are exhibited at the Acropolis Museum. Removal of pollution accumulations from their surface takes place in this laboratory. This arrangement brings the visitors of the Acropolis Museum in contact with the conservation interventions that until now took place only inside restricted access laboratory environments. This exhibits a symbolic connection between ancient and modern Greece.

Dr. Giannis Mpourmpakis was selected to participate in the 60th Nobel Laureates Meeting as a young researcher.


Dr. Giannis Mpourmpakis (Ioannis Bourmpakis), a post doctorate researcher in Dr. Andriotis' group, at the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser, was selected to participate in the 60th Nobel Laureates Meeting as a young researcher. The 2010 Meeting takes place from June 27th to July 2nd, 2010 in Lindau, Germany.

Each young researcher belongs to the budding scientific elite of his/her country and has passed a multi-stage international selection procedure. Dr. Mpourmpakis was awarded a Marie-Curie International Outgoing Fellowship by the European Commission in 2008 to investigate the CO oxidation on Au nanoparticles in Prof. Vlachos' group, at the Chemical Engineering Department, University of Delaware, together with Andriotis' group of the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser - FORTH.

The Effect of Chemistry on Rheology in Supramolecular Polymers

Supramolecular polymers possess versatile mechanical properties and a unique ability
to respond to external stimuli. Understanding the rich dynamics of associative polymers
is essential for tailoring user-defined properties in polymeric materials. In this talk we will
examine the effect of varying associating chemistry, e.g. ionomers, hydrogen bonds, and
hydrophilic-hydrophobic interactions, on linear viscoelasticity and nonlinear extensional
rheology. The investigation of nonlinear extensional rheology is particularly of interest as
such materials are questionably more solid than fluid on certain timescales. In general,
associating polymers have two adjustable parameters: the interaction strength and the
number of associating groups per chain. We will show that independent of chemistry there
are three effects on linear viscoelasticity due to an increase in interaction strength and/or
the number of associations per chain: (i) the longest relaxation time increases, (ii) the
plateau modulus increases, and (iii) the power law scaling in the terminal regime deviates
toward lower magnitudes for nonuniform distributions of association groups along the
backbone. Increasing both interaction strength and number of interactions per chain has
a profound effect on nonlinear extensional rheology. In unentangled systems, too strong of
an interaction causes the material to behave like a brittle solid, i.e. fractures at low strain,
when the experimental time is shorter than the relaxation time of the association groups,
s. When the experimental time is longer than s, the material is deformable and behaves
similar to an non-associating entangled linear polymer melt. Entangled associating polymer
systems behave quite differently and exhibit very strong strain hardening dynamics;
achieving stresses orders of magnitude larger than their plateau modulus. Throughout
the discussion, effort will be made to make comparisons between associating and nonassociating
linear polymer melt rheology in order to contextualize our understanding of
supramolecular polymer dynamics.
