Small molecule migration in complex matrices: role of elasticity

Abstract

 

abstract: When a binary polymer mixture having differing molecular weights and a free surface is left to equilibrate the small molecular weight component migrates to the surface. Despite several experimental and theoretical studies some fundamental questions regarding this simple problem still remain unanswered. I will talk about our work in connection to small molecule migration in binary polymeric gels where gel elasticity plays an important role in dictating the migration characteristics of small molecules. Time permitting I will also discuss my research on obtaining shape equations for liquid crystals self-assembled on curved geometries with free boundaries and edges and packing of chromatin in the cell nucleus.
