Laser Induced Contamination: A real hazard for laser optics in space

Abstract

Laser Induced Contamination (LIC) is one of the major issues for Ultra Violet (UV) lasers in space that can cause catastrophic effects on their optics. UV radiation can enhance the contamination deposition process on optical surfaces under vacuum conditions by molecular interaction with the contaminants and subsequent photo-fixation. In this presentation recent studies on LIC characteristics and evolution will be shown and discussed.
