Laser assisted removal of polymeric over-layers from paintings

The selective laser cleaning of aged and deteriorated varnish layers from paintings relies on similar principles to the UV laser ablation of polymers. To optimise laser cleaning interventions research aims to study the nature and extent of laser-induced physicochemical alterations to the involved materials and introduce novel laser regimes (i.e. ultrafast lasers) into the field.
