The Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser (IESL) of the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH), in the frame of the project ‘EXEL-Extending Electromagnetism Through Novel Artificial Materials’, which is an “ERC Grant”, is seeking for three (3) Post-doctoral Researchers to join the group of Photonic-Phononic and Meta-Materials. 



Abstract

ARISTEIES

 

Position 1
The project is on theoretical and experimental study of chiral metamaterials. It requires design and simulation of both passive and dynamically controllable chiral metamaterials, as well as electromagnetic characterization of such metamaterials in microwaves and IR. Considerable attention will be given to the potential of the devised chiral structures to give reduced attractive or even repulsive Casimir force.
 
Requirements
·         PhD in chemistry with emphasis in materials synthesis
·         Experience in the study of chiral metamaterials
·         Experience in programming and computer use
·         Good knowledge of microwave transmission and reflection measurements and of FTIR spectroscopy
·         Scientific Publications
·         Excellent knowledge of English language
 
Position 2
Theoretical and computational analysis of active photonic crystals and metamaterials. The project is on theoretical and computational analysis of photonic crystals (PC) and metamaterials incorporating gain media. It involves design and simulation of different metamaterial, PC and plasmonic structures, and examination of the lasing and spacing capabilities and conditions for those structures. The main computational tool employed is a Finite-Difference Time Domain (FDTD) code. In the framework of the project the existing FDTD code will be further developed and it will be adapted to the different category of problems, structures and gain material configurations.

·         Experience in the theoretical and computational study of photonic crystals and metamaterials
·         Experience in programming and the Finite Difference Time Domain method

·         Excellent knowledge of English language
 
Position 3
Radiation emission control in photonic crystals and metamaterials. The project is on theoretical and computational analysis of the potential of finite photonic crystal (PC) and metamaterial structures to control the direction and the spatial properties of electromagnetic radiation. Emphasis will be given to the potential of PC structures to lead to directional emission of the radiation passing through them or coming out from them. Since such direction control is achieved with the involvement of surface states, the role of surface states in the emitted radiation properties will be thoroughly investigated. The aim is to analyze and understand the connection between surface state formation and properties on one hand and spatial properties and direction of the emitted radiation on the other hand.

Start Date: 1st of August 2015
Project Duration: 2 Months
Cost: 5.228 for positions 1 and 2
          4.920 for position 3

Selection Procedure
Applications that are received on time are going to be reviewed by the scientific committee. The committee will select the candidacies that best match the position and project requirements, based on the score that they will get according to the criteria table as shown on the Appendix in the end of the present announcement. If necessary, certain candidates will be invited to a personal interview with the committee on a specific date and time that will be announced.
The successful candidates will be personally notified and will be asked to present the required documents in original form within six (6) working days after the results announcement on the web. In the case that the presented documents don’t match those submitted, the candidates will be dismissed from the procedure.

Regarding the selection of candidates for the position of one postdoctoral researchers in the frame of the project ‘EXEL-Extending Electromagnetism Through Novel Artificial Materials’, which is an “ERC Grant” as announced by the Institute of Electronic Structure and Laser, the review procedure will be as follows:

(Β) The result of the selection will be announced on the website of IESL-FORTH as well as on the website of “DIAVGEIA”
Candidates have the right to appeal the selection decision, by addressing their written objection to the IESL secretariat within three (3) working days since the results announcement on the web. They also have the right to access (a) the personal files of the candidates as well as (b) the table of candidates’ scores in line with the Γ/ΕΞ/4163-1/06.07.2012 document of the Hellenic Data Protection Authority. All the above information related to the selection procedure will be available at the secretariat of IESL-FORTH.
 
After the expiration of the appeal period and the review of the objections by the committee, the evaluation of the candidacies is finalized. Then the committee will ask the successful candidates to accept the position within three (3) working days and to present all relevant documents in original form. In the case that the presented documents don’t match those submitted, the candidates will be dismissed from the procedure as well as in the case of non-acceptance or non-response on time. In these cases, the candidate with the second higher score will be asked to accept the position according to the same procedure.  This will be repeated until a suitable candidate is accepts the position. In case of no candidate accepting the position, the position will be declared vacant.
 
FORTH reserves the right not to accept applications submitted, or not proceed to the conclusion of a contract in case insurmountable reasons arise such as funding interruption of the program, economic weakness.
