LASER TECHNOLOGY FOR STRUCTURAL DIAGNOSTICS, COMPOSITIONAL ANALYSIS AND CLEANING OF CULTURAL HERITAGE OBJECTS
Lasers hold an important role in the protection and study of Cultural Heritage (CH) Monuments and objects. Their unique properties have enabled their use in a wide range of demanding analytical and conservation applications, since they ensure analysis and interventions with precise control, material selectivity and immediate feedback.
IESL-FORTH has a long experience in the exploitation of novel analytical, diagnostic and cleaning methodologies as well as in the development of prototype instruments. Thus in the last 20 years a number of complex diagnostic and restoration problems have been effectively illuminated and successfully completed.
On this basis IESL-FORTH offers the following analytical, diagnostic and cleaning products in the service of our Cultural Heritage:
- Digital Holographic Speckle Pattern Interferometry (DHSPI)
Structural documentation can be conducted with the Digital Holographic Speckle Pattern Interferometry system DHSPI-I.
- Spectral Imaging
Imaging studies could be performed using the prototype spectral imaging systems IRIS-Iand IRIS - II.
- Laser Spectroscopic Analysis (LIBS, LIF & Raman)
LIBS analytical measurements can be performed using LMNT-II, a mobile LIBS instrument (λ = 1064 nm). Raman measurements may be performed on a compact micro-Raman system (λ = 785 nm).
- Laser cleaning
A variety of laser systems are available for cleaning applications covering a great variety of cleaning challenges.
